covid-19 response

We help the most vulnerable people in Bwaise survive COVID-19.

COVID-19 impact on Bwaise

To curb the spread of the COVID-19 global pandemic in Uganda, the country’s government put into place a national lockdown in July 2021.

In Bwaise, more than 100,000 people have been living in poor conditions. 82% of its residents still live on under $2 per day. The area is densely populated and large families live in small makeshift homes close to each other.

Families were suffering from the hunger created by restrictive measures taken to prevent the COVID-19 virus from spreading. During the ongoing lockdown, people in Bwaise were unable to work and feed themselves. Many families were not receiving food relief from the government, and were at risk of starving.

Bwaise’s economy has been dominated by casual work including the selling of goods on the street, motorcycle taxis and food trading. The lockdown measures prevented people from working and being able to afford food. Before the lockdown, AFFCAD School provided students with daily nutritious meals. With the school closed, children were missing these.

Please donate to help the community in Bwaise survive unexpected challenges like lockdown measures.

AFFCAD UK's 2020 Covid-19 Response

With support from our incredible community of donors, fundraisers and partners, AFFCAD and AFFCAD UK managed to raise over £25,000 to provide the following:

  1. Distribution of emergency packages including food and sanitary products to 300 families. These included: charcoal; rice, beans and cooking oil; hand washing soap; etc.
  2. Increased awareness of COVID-19, preventative measures such as hand-washing and social distancing, and domestic awareness (including signposting to Government support hotline) through the production and distribution of materials in local languages.
  3. Continued provision of high-quality primary education through the development of remote learning materials.
